Traumpfade-Land Mayen-Koblenz achieves record results for overnight stays
Almost breaking the million barrier – REMET: Quality pays off
Tourism in the district of Mayen-Koblenz continued its positive development in 2023. With 981,401 overnight stays, a new record figure was once again achieved, as the latest figures from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Statistical Office make clear. “This means that the previous record year of 2022 was exceeded by 2.4 percent. The Traumpfade-Landkreis Mayen-Koblenz is benefiting primarily from domestic guests, but the number of foreign guests is also increasing again after the corona-related slump,” says Michael Schwippert, Deputy Managing Director of Rhein-Mosel-Eifel-Touristik (REMET), the special-purpose association of the MYK district.
Tourism in Mayen-Koblenz has been growing for a long time. “While 645,278 overnight stays were registered in 2006, this figure rose to 670,269 in 2010, 776,502 four years later and 887,479 in 2018. The rising number of overnight stays is proof of the attractiveness of our vacation destination – for vacations, excursions and business trips. And they are also the result of the performance of our extremely warm and cosmopolitan hosts,” emphasizes Schwippert.
With the right mix of city and countryside, hiking on the dream trails and walking on the dream paths, volcanism and the world’s steepest vineyards, cultural treasures such as Eltz Castle and the world’s highest cold-water geyser, the Rhine-Moselle-Eifel region offers outstanding all-round packages. “We are a region of superlatives and word is getting around more and more,” says the deputy managing director of REMET.
Looking at the latest figures from the State Statistical Office, it is clear that the number of guests and overnight stays in the district of Mayen-Koblenz rose significantly again last year. In 2023, exactly 405,732 guests stayed overnight in the district – 7.6 percent more than in the previous year. Guests stayed in MYK for an average of 2.42 days and booked 981,401 overnight stays, which also represents an increase of 2.4% compared to 2022. Many towns and municipalities (VG) in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in particular benefited from the number of overnight stays: the VG Vordereifel (+26.3%), the VG Vallendar (+10.0%) and the VG Rhein-Mosel (+3.6%) were able to significantly increase the number of guests in 2023. While 81% of guests came from all over Germany, 19% came from abroad. In figures, this means that 184,387 overnight stays were registered by foreign guests in the Traumpfade-Land MYK, mainly from the neighboring Netherlands and Belgium – that is 2.8 percent more than in the previous year.
REMET sees three main reasons for the pleasing increase in guest numbers: Vacations in Germany continue to be a trend, the Rhine-Moselle-Eifel region scores highly with its outdoor activities and the number of conference guests is also on the rise. “Our vacation region is strongly characterized by outdoor activities. Dream trails and dream paths, as well as the Rheinsteig, RheinBurgenWeg and Moselsteig trails are among our top products, which are extremely popular and attract guests from all over Germany and the Benelux countries. In addition, there is the area of cycling,” explains REMET Deputy Managing Director Michael Schwippert and emphasizes that the VRM guest ticket, which many hosts provide to their guests for the use of local public transport, is also having an impact, especially on the Rhine and Moselle.
For Rhein-Mosel-Eifel-Touristik, the constant upward trend is motivation to continue with the same determination and energy as before in order to attract even more guests to the Traumpfade-Land. New digital projects and highlights for families, new cycle routes and an increased focus on regional delights (www.leckermyk.de) are on the agenda for 2024. REMET Managing Director Henning Schröder therefore believes that the tourism industry in the district is in an excellent position. “Our focus on quality has paid off. All players in tourism are also pulling in the same direction,” says Henning Schröder, who is also pleased with the excellent figures: “More and more hikers are coming to the Mayen-Koblenz dream trail region for several days, which benefits all of the district’s communities.” Not forgetting the conference guests, who feel increasingly at home in the MYK economic region.
