Municipality of Pellenz

Rich in basalt, pumice and lava

The Pellenz is located south-east of Lake Laach, in the beautiful Nette valley and nestled between the Rhine, Brohl valley and Eifel heights. This unique landscape was created 13,000 years ago when huge volcanic eruptions shook the earth. Would you like to watch a volcano spewing glowing hot lava into the air and find out whether stones can swim? This and much more is possible at the Rauschermühle Volcano Park Information Center in Plaidt/Saffig.

The 2,000-year-old Meurin Roman mine in Kretz takes you back to Roman times. Marvel at the tools that were used back then and learn interesting facts about the working world of the time.

The Pellenz Museum in Saffig Castle Park has an interesting collection of archaeological finds.

The wide range of cycling and hiking trails allows you to combine cultural highlights, such as the Wernerseck castle ruins, with fascinating nature. Hike through the romantic Nettetal valley and visit Lake Laach. The Pellenzer Seepfad dream trail takes you up to the Teufelskanzel with a breathtaking view down to the Krufter Waldsee. Your path then leads you through beautiful mixed forest to Lake Laach and its bubbling mofettes on the eastern shore. What an experience when it becomes clear that the volcano beneath Lake Laach is only dormant and has never been completely extinguished.

The five pretty towns of Kretz, Kruft, Nickenich, Plaidt and Saffig are charming and welcoming. Listen to the unmistakable dialect and take part in their traditions.
