Mayen

In the heart of the volcanic East Eifel

The pretty Eifel town of Mayen lies in the heart of the volcanic Eastern Eifel and is therefore the “gateway to the Eifel“. High above the market square, the legendary Genoveva Castle, dating back to the 13th century, dominates the townscape with its impressive tower. Inside the castle is the Eifel Museum with the German Slate Mine. You can experience the world of slate mining deep underground in the tunnels.

In the summer months from June to August, professional actors share their skills with visitors at the Mayen Castle Festival in the castle courtyard. The open-air theater in a class of its own is not to be missed!

No less striking and just as mysterious is the leaning tower of the Clemens Church, which can be seen from the castle grounds.

The Katzenberg Roman fortress is a 70-metre-long reconstruction of a hilltop fortification from the late Roman period, as was often the case in the Eifel and Hunsrück regions. It offers sweeping views as far as the eastern Eifel.

Experience 7,000 years of mining history of volcanic basalt and original mining sites in the Grubenfeld adventure world with the adjacent Mayen mine field.

The “Förstersteig” dream trail and the “Eifeltraum” dream trail offer the kind of hiking enjoyment you could wish for.
