Fruit trees, orchards and long forgotten varieties of fruit trees line the wayside. Terrific views over the volcanic Eifel, a panorama of the Rhine valley over the whole Neuwieder basin and far into the Westerwald Forest. Exciting experience stations with an insect hotel, a dendrophone, tree quiz, a fragrance didacticum and an informative fruit nature trail.
Verlauf
Immediately after the start at the car park at the sportsfield in Dalfter, above Kärlich, there is the first wonderful view over the Rhine valley. Afterwards the trail dives into magnificent orchard meadows – in spring, a single sea of white and pink blossoms. The trail then coninues up to the Kettig Barbecue Hut with its fine panoramic view. Along the path through a picturesque mixture of forest, orchards and meadows to the first experience station: the fruit nature trail. Through the wood and the Kettig valley, the trail takes us along the Arenz meadows down to the Kettig stream. Passing by thick, knotty elder trees and other orchard meadows it continues up to a plateau with a grand panoramic view over the volcanic Eifel. The passage that follows over open fields also reveals fabulous views. Continuing along a row of trees, more experience stations are awaiting along the trail: an insect hotel, a dendrophone and a fragrance didacticum. Along the side of a plot of fruit trees the path continues to a hain at the edge of the Karl-Heinrich clay pit and through bushes. Shortly afterwards the trail goes in changing directions upwards to a hill with a grand panorama of the Rhine valley. At the edge of the forest the narrow path leads down to the Dalfter Barbecue Hut. Continuing through a beech wood the trail goes uphill to the viewing platform of the clay pit. After a short descent along a path through the wood, the trail reaches its starting point.
Anfahrt: B 9 exit Weissenthurm / Mülheim-Kärlich / Kettig – follow the K65 in the direction of Mülheim-Kärlich – take 1st road right, Hauptstrasse – along this road until Holzstraße – turn left at the sign“Dalfter Sportplatz“ (car park on the “Oberster-Kettiger-Weg”)
